PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The New England Patriots could sign a tentative deal with Rhode Island as early as today to move the team to Providence, those close to the situation said last night.
Meanwhile, Rhode Island's proposed contribution to help the Patriots build a 68,000-seat stadium next to Interstate 95 has increased to as much as $157 million, far above the $80 million to $120 million first projected for land and infrastructure costs, according to sources close to the negotiations.
